In marketing, recommendations are only as useful as the insight that informs them.

Effective purpose or sustainability marketing requires some fundamental truths. Be more authentic. Tell better stories. Integrate impact across the funnel. Lead with proof. In our experience these foundations are essential.

These are easy things to say. What is harder is implementing them as thoughtful, tangible, and connected strategies calibrated for a brand's specific circumstances.

To serve that challenge, we built THE READ.

Distinct, but connected

Two things can be true at the same time.

Purpose messaging is judged by its own rules. When selling a product, your audience needs to know why they should buy it. However, when you share that you are decarbonizing a supply chain, that same audience also needs to understand why that fact is relevant to their purchase decision. The purpose message needs to work at multiple altitudes, feeding both a commercial and compliance message simultaneously. This requires a special focus.

"Focus is not the same as separation."

But focus is not the same as separation. The common mistake is to quarantine purpose messaging off to the side, as a standalone report, a vanity URL, or a disclosure written for regulators. But to be believed, it cannot sit apart as mere compliance. It has to run through everything as an ever-present ladder: woven into the homepage, the product, and the campaign, in accessible and inspiring language built around what customers really care about. It is not, and should never be, a bolt-on.

That balance is hard, and many brands get it wrong.

IP built to action this balance

THE READ is a proprietary, AI-driven diagnostic from HOWL, built for impact and sustainability leaders. It lets us assess how your purpose messaging is performing across every public touch-point.

Are you being heard? Are you believed? Are you inspiring action? THE READ measures all three based on what your audience sees and hears, because that shapes what those audiences will do after they interact with your brand.

THE READ diagnoses the issues holding a purpose message back, and surfaces the opportunities to express it with more force. The framework has three moving parts, and each one exists to turn observation into insight, and insight into action.

HOWL For Conscious Brands
HOWL. An agency for purpose.

Six signals, four touch-points, one read

The first part is a set of six signals, each posed as a question for our research engine.

Volume. Are you being heard, or are you being lost? Could a competitor swap in their logo and claim the same thing?

Integration. Is your point of view woven through the homepage and the product, or quarantined on a vanity URL or an isolated social post?

Identity. Would the brand fundamentally change if you stripped out its purpose, or is that purpose a marketing layer you could peel off without anyone noticing?

Candor. Do you show the scars alongside the vision, or does your own reporting somehow have you winning on every front, regardless of reality?

Desire. Are you inviting people into a future they want, or instructing them to comply with one they don't need or understand?

Momentum. Are your impact messages earning conversations, or fading quietly into the feed?

THE READ asks all six, on your behalf, and scores the answers against evidence. But a signal means nothing in the abstract. So it also scores each one against four primary public touch-points.

Website. Your owned shop window, and primary conversion engine.

Social. Where a point of view either emerges or gets broadcast.

Reputation. The third-party layer: reviews, Glassdoor, Reddit, certifications, and how the major AI engines describe you.

Earned. The coverage you cannot buy, where the market decides whether you are worthy of attention.

THE READ also assesses belief in your brand, because even a message that is heard can fail if no one believes it. This looks at three components.

Trust. Do audiences accept your claims, or quietly assume spin?

Substance. Is your impact backed by evidence anyone can verify, or are you asking the audience for a leap of faith?

Participation. Have you handed people a genuine role in the work, or do you just broadcast an intention?

Bar chart showing six signals of brand loudness across Website, Social, Reputation, Earned surfaces with values.
HOWL delivers insights on a volumetric scale

From insight to recommendation

THE READ resolves all of the above into a single graded verdict, a five-step readout that gives impact leaders a diagnostic for their message alongside recommendations for what to improve next. This is done with a dual focus.

EDGE is what we call strategy. The connected needs of your marketing ecosystem. The positioning opportunity built on insight. The category cliché that requires substance. The microsite to fold back into the brand.

PLAY is what we call creative provocation. It is where creativity can dial up what you inspire. It exposes the openings for emotional bond-building, habit disruption, and engagement among the audiences you need to move.
